Thiago Tavares out of UFC 114 bout with Melvin Guillard due to elbow injury

A lightweight bout between Thiago Tavares (14-3-1 MMA, 4-3-1 UFC) and Melvin Guillard's (23-8-2 MMA, 6-4 UFC) planned for UFC 114 has been scratched.

Tavares recently pulled out of the fight due to an elbow injury, his manager, Alex Davis, alerted MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) overnight.

The UFC has not officially announced the change to the fight, which was scheduled for the night's un-aired preliminary card, and a replacement search is underway.

UFC 114 takes place May 29 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and coincides with UFC Fan Expo 2010.

According to Davis, Tavares hyper-extended his elbow during a training session. A timetable for his recovery is not known.

"Thiago just can't seem to catch a break," Davis said. "This would have been a great fight."

After earning his way into the UFC on the strength of a perfect 10-0 record, Tavares has had mixed results with a 4-3-1 mark in the world's biggest MMA promotion. Tavares' most recent outing resulted in a majority draw with Nik Lentz at January's UFC Fight Night 20 event. Tavares had earned the first two rounds of the fight before a spirited third-round effort by Lentz (coupled with a one-point deduction for Tavares after a low blow) left the fight a draw.

A devastating striker, Guillard has been fed a heavy diet of grapplers in recent contests. "The Young Assassin" has won four of his past five outings – a stretch that includes victories over Brazilian jiu-jitsu players Ronys Torres and Gleison Tibau. Prior to the UFC 109 win over Torres, Guillard moved to the famed Jackson's camp in New Mexico and credits trainer Greg Jackson with his recent improvement.

Waylon Lowe Replaces Injured Thiago Tavares, Faces Melvin Guillard At UFC 114

Waylon Lowe (8-2) will replace an injured Thiago Tavares against Melvin Guillard at UFC 114, set for May 29 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Reports of Tavares’ injury were reported earlier this morning. Heavy MMA confirmed Lowe as the replacement with sources close to the fight.
Lowe last fought on April 16 at a King of the Cage event where he scored a first round knockout. He is riding a six-fight win streak and hasn’t lost since May of 2007.
Guillard has won four of his last five fights, most recently grinding out a unanimous decision victory over Ronnys Torres at UFC 109.
