ABC approves adoption of four new weight classes for MMA

The ABC approved the addition of four new weight classes — at 165 pounds, 175 pounds, 195 pounds and 225 pounds, per multiple regulators in attendance at the conference. The weight classes will be called super lightweight, super welterweight, super middleweight and cruiserweight, respectively. The current 170-pound division — welterweight — will remain in the Unified Rules.

I like this, other than them keeping 170lbs.......that makes no sense.

See, I like it......but only if it's done properly. The current divisions should be scrapped and move to divisions going from 155, 165, 175, 185, 195, 225(not really needed) and 265.

All that does is add 1 new division........but makes it more straightforward with 10lb's between each division, should allow for less extreme cutting.

you don't think it'll water the product down a great deal?

Don't see this becoming an issue at the UFC level for some time. Maybe affecting regional shows and up and coming fighters more than guys who are already established.

Can't find a lot to argue about the way Blue lined up the weight classes, but would for personal preference include a 205lb division, lots of talent to be had in that size/weight range. Also like the idea of even lighter weight classes if there are talented fighters out there in that size/weight range, as I suspect there are, but seeing how hard it is to sell fights at 125lbs, I don't expect to see that development at the UFC level any time soon. Wouldn't be shocked if there happened to be more talent waiting to be find an opportunity below 125 lbs than there are talented heavy or even super-heavyweights, but we know how everyone likes to watch the big guys, myself included...

Like I said, it would only add 1 division if they did it the way I said......195 maybe not needed......but between 155 and 175, that's 3 divisions where there is a huge amount of talent, I don't think it gets watered down one bit, not even a little........just gives us more really good quality fights. 185 and 205 are probably fine, no need for 195 right now, seeing as there is a bit of a lack in depth there. I do think there is talent out there, it just needs bringing to the US/UFC.......I've been watching so many of these Russian shows just now, there are so many good fighters out there.

I think the biggest issue is that they have far too many low level fighters to fill cards........I can't see why they don't just have the top talent on contracts, and fill cards the same way every other org does, by using some localised talent.........if they impress, give them another fight.

That'd be shitty for the fighters themselves, they need bit more job security than that.
