Really a shame, as I thought this was a good match-up, a tough fight for both guys, and a real welcome-to-the-big-leagues for Cormier. Still would have liked to have seen what would have happened if Barnett didn't break his hand in the first minute of their contest, but that's the fight game and Cormier came away with the win.

Can't think of anyone in the current heavyweight picture who has the name recognition and pedigree of a Frank Mir that's also available. Stylistically I think Roy Nelson might have proved a tough match for Cormier, but Roy has a date with Shane Carwin, who would also be a decent match in this scenario as a test for Cormier as he's being talked about for entrance into the UFC.

Part of the appeal of this fight was Mir, a long time UFC heavy, going over to SF. Wouldn't have the same effect if they pulled in Werdum or Bigfoot Silva, who came from Strikeforce previously and then went over to the big leagues much more recently. Gabriel Gonzaga came to mind, good name recognition and a decent fighter, but I looked and he's supposed to fight at 153 on Oct. 13...

Agreed, I really liked the Mir fight for the same reasons. I'm not sure how long Mir is out, but if it's not long then this fight should be rearranged for whenever he is ready, rather than find an unworthy replacement. The talent pool to face Cormier is really thin just now so it will take a good effort to make this fight a worthwhile one.

I say give it to Big Country. That guy is fun to watch and has the ability to beat Cormier, imo.
