Anderson Silva's Manager Vetoes Jon Jones and Chris Weidman Fights; Open to Nick Diaz

Aug 1, 2012 - LOS ANGELES -- We're still far away from finding out UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva's next opponent.

But on Wednesday, Silva's manager, Ed Soares, emphatically stated he doesn't think a bout with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is the right fight to make.

Speaking with reporters at the UFC on FOX 4 open workouts at the JW Marriott hotel in downtown Los Angeles, Soares ridiculed the notion of making a champion vs. champion superfight.

"I don't think it's a good fight," Soares said. "I think No. 1, Jon Jones, said he doesn't want the fight, and Anderson said he doesn't want the fight. What is it going to do for Jones if he goes go down in weight to fight Anderson? If he loses it's going to ruin him. If Anderson Silva moves up in weight and fights Jon Jones, here's a lighter guy who's going to take my title? C'mon dude.

"Anderson is fighting a much younger guy, a much bigger guy, and Jon Jones is going to be fighting a smaller guy who technically could be better than him. I can see why each guy wouldn't want to fight. What's the upside?"

When a reporter replied "money" to Soares rhetorical question, Soares answered "There's money out there regardless."

"[UFC president] Dana [White] can't force anyone to fight at a bigger weight class," Soares continued. "Anderson is the 185-pound champion. He'll fight anyone you put in front of him. So make Jon Jones make 185 pounds if you want that to happen."

With Soares insisting that Jones vs. Silva is unlikely, that leaves the question of Silva's next title defense open. There's a pack of fighters looking to make their case, the most vocal of whom has been Chris Weidman, who is ranked No. 3 at 185 pounds by MMAFighting.com. But Soares summarily dismissed Weidman when asked.

"I mean, because he had an impressive win over Mark Munoz and [Demian] Maia?" Soares paused and rolled his eyes before adding "Sure."

One name that Soares didn't reflexively reject was former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz, whose manager, Cesar Gracie, said on Friday that Diaz would like a fight with the champion.

"Sure, we'll consider anyone the UFC puts in front of us, I don't have a choice," said Soares. "Nick Diaz is a good opponent possibly, I mean, he's a smaller guy, but he's a guy who comes out and fights every time, he's going to put on a good fight."

Of course, Diaz is under suspension until February, so Soares, like the rest of us, will wait and see what the UFC offers Silva.

"I don't know what's going to happen, that's a question for Dana and [UFC matchmaker Joe] Silva."

This is really starting to become a joke man. Even Anderson's strongest supporters have to admit that this is getting ridiculous.

True, but the man is paid to communicate how Anderson feels about these things.

I agree. Some other posters on here beleive he's speaking on his own behalf and that Silva has nothing to do with what he says. I think that's some serious BS.

This, is seriously, the dumbest thing, anyone has ever said in MMA. He should never be allowed to speak about anything MMA again. If Anderson Silva can't speak for himself, then we do not need to hear what anderson thinks, or feels about things. This, is crazy retarded. Seriously. He don't want to fight weidman, which I would pick weidman to beat him, for personal reasons. I like Silva better, but when a close friend tells you about a guy gonna be the one to beat Anderson Silva, before a guy is ever even in the UFC, and he is gonna fight Silva, you route for the guy. Thats the fight I want to see for Silva. But then you have the stupid comments about Jon Jones, and Nick Diaz. Anderson can't go up to fight Jon Jones, cause Jon Jones is much bigger than Anderson Silva. But, Anderson Silva can fight a much smaller opponent such as Nick Diaz.

Okay, first thing wrong, "neither of these guys wants this fight." that's not only wrong, its stupid. I know for a fact there have been a bunch of articles posted everywhere, including this site, from a while back ago, from when Jon Jones said he would fight Silva with no problems. So Anderson Silva doesn't want to fight Jon Jones because he is bigger than him? Alright, I am fine with that. Come out and say "Anderson Silva doesn't want to fight Jon Jones because he is much smaller than him." and end your talking there. Don't go on to say "Besides, Jon Jones don't want to fight Silva." cause that is just stupid. You are paid to speak for Silva, yea, but you aren't paid to speak for Jon Jones.

Next thing, he don't want to fight Jon Jones, cause he is smaller than him, which I really am fine with, and I understand that. I wouldn't wanna fight Jon Jones either. But he don't want to fight him cause he is smaller, but he would love to fight Nick Diaz. First I'll start by saying, I actually wouldn't mind seeing Diaz vs. Silva. Now that I have said that. He won't fight Jones, because he is smaller than him, but he wants to fight a guy who fights at 170, and could make 155. He thinks it is stupid for people to say Jones vs. Silva, because Silva is the 185 champion, so if that fight is going to happen, clearly the thing to do is Jones drop to 185. Alright, so, I assume, Silva is going to drop down to let's say, 170 for the fight with Nick Diaz, right? That is what is going to happen right? Becuase if Jones wants to fight Silva, then Jones has to drop down. So if Silva, wants to fight Diaz, he is going to drop down to 170 right? The funniest thing about this whole thing, is that Anderson Silva ACTUALLY could make 170, Jon Jones CAN'T make 185. It really is easy to talk shit, or have your manager talk shit, about someone you don't have to worry about fighting. Who needs their mouth to write checks their ass can't cash, when you can have your mouth piece write checks, that your ass doesn't have to ever attempt to cash.

Well that's because there have been instances in the past when Soreass has misspoken about what Anderson wants to do like saying he's retiring after two more fights which was about five or six fights ago. This guy has a history of saying things for Anderson which is not the way Anderson feels nor wants to do. Anderson has corrected him more than once.

Well if SIlva isn't speaking up and saying that Soares is misspeaking about these topics, then it is rational to believe that Soares is speaking for SIlva. If SIlva didn't agree with what is being said he'd speak up. Not speaking up means he's agreeing with all the BS Soares is spewing, imo.

I totally agree with this. We have seen Anderson Silva, recently come out and say something Soares has said was completely wrong. When he was talking about Silva is about to retire, Silva came out and called him an idiot basically. So if Silva isn't coming out saying this is stupid, then obviously he agrees with it.
