Tryouts are under way for the second international edition of the UFC's popular reality series, "The Ultimate Fighter," and some broadcast plans also have been revealed.
"The Ultimate Fighter: Australia vs. U.K." will get a broadcast on FX in Australia this fall, UFC officials have announced.
The series features fighters from Australia against fighters from the United Kingdom, coached by UFC fighters from Down Under and the U.K., respectively.
Dubbed "The Smashes" as an homage to an old cricket rivalry between the U.K. and Australia, the series gets a national rivalry added to it that will not be unlike "TUF 9," which pitted the U.S. against the U.K. with coaches Dan Henderson and
Coaches for "TUF: Australia vs. U.K." are expected to be announced soon with taping likely to begin later this month in Sydney.
There is no word on possible broadcast plans in the U.S. The first season of "TUF: Brazil," which taped earlier this year, had episodes shown online each week after airing on Globo in Brazil. But on Sunday, FUEL TV began airing episodes for U.S. viewers.
“We’re excited to be part of the FX family in Australia," Marshall Zelaznik, the UFC's managing director for international development, stated. "When the first series of 'The Ultimate Fighter' debuted in the United States seven years ago, it brought in millions of new fans who tuned in each and every week to watch their favorite fighters. I have no doubt that 'The Smashes' will do the same in Australia. We’re looking forward to working with FX to take the UFC to new heights and new audiences in this country.”
The UFC is auditioning welterweights and lightweights for the season, though it currently is not known if fighters will need to win a bout to get into the 'TUF' house as has been customary for the U.S. version of the show, as well as 'TUF: Brazil.'
Zelaznik recently told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the "TUF: Australia vs. U.K." live finale could took place in Brisbane.
The U.S. version of "The Ultimate Fighter" took on a new live weekly format this past spring with a live finale just a week after the semifinals. For 'TUF: Brazil,' which was taped in one stretch and aired later, the finalists in featherweight and middleweight divisions meet on the UFC 147 pay-per-view main card on June 23 in Brazil.
