Cesar Gracie Baffled by Nick Diaz’s Marijuana Suspension

Cesar Gracie, Nick Diaz’s (Pictured) longtime manager, is baffled by the 12-month suspension the Nevada State Athletic Commission handed his protégé on Monday. What seems to irk Gracie the most is that other fighters committing worse crimes have received lesser punishments.
“Get drunk and wreck cars or do steroids between fights is OK. Smoke weed legally between fights and NSAC throws the book at you,” Gracie tweeted.
Gracie is referencing UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones and former heavyweight top contender Alistair Overeem, respectively. Jones totaled his $190,000 Bentley and got popped for a DUI over the weekend, while Overeem failed his random UFC 146 pre-fight drug test after injecting himself with testosterone.
Jones won’t likely face any form of punishment by an athletic commission or the UFC, at least publicly, and Overeem was only banned for nine months by the very same board that suspended Diaz for a year after registering positive for marijuana metabolites.
Mr. 209 was issued a medical marijuana license to treat his case of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Diaz is eligible to return to action as early as February 4th, 2013. Although, that day may never come. The 28-year-old retired from mixed martial arts following his loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143 and has not expressed any interest in coming back.
However, absence makes the heart grow fonder and Diaz has plenty of time on his side to rekindle his love for the sport.

I'm no Cesar fan and I like Nick even less but he's kinda got a point. However, I don't think the AC's really have anything to do with Jones and his case. Maybe once Jones' is convicted, they could do something but I doubt it. But Reem pissing a so freaking high seems worthy of more than 9 months, it should have been a year also. What Cesar seems to forget, this is strike #2 for Diaz, is it not?

I would say Nick has gotten a severe sentence because he lied on his application, but Overeem and Sonnen did as well, so what gives? Its clear bias against medical marijuana, there is no other reasonable explanation.

And Misfit, you're right the commission has nothing to do with what Jones did (though NY doesn't have a commission anyway). I'm not starting an argument with anyone over whether or not weed should be legal or medicinal or whatever, but let's be honest: will Ross Pearson be penalized by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for his DUI in Nevada?? No he won't. Its a double standard. Alcohol is way more dangerous than weed, and to act like weed is a performance enhancing drug is the biggest joke since James Toney headlining a UFC. Diaz loses an entire year of his professional career in the prime of his physical condition for weed when guys taking steroids so that they can beat they're opponents more savagely get six to nine month sentences? Its outrageous, plain and simple.

well, I will never feel sorry for Diaz since he took his ball and went home. And I do agree, weed should be legal, no doubt about it. But, it's not. Diaz is required to piss clean before a fight, it's a simple rule, stupid in the case of weed but yet, still very simple. While I don't think the AC's should touch Ross or Bones, I think the UFC should. I think they should each be fined 30% of their next fight's purse.

To fine an individual for what they did in their personal life outside the scope of their official capacity under Zuffa's employ doesn't sound legal to me... so that probably isn't gonna happen because there must be a legal precedent that has already challenged something like this.
Even when I'm 100% certain of a fight outcome, I'm only 75% sure... and of that, there's only a 50/50 shot that I'm right.

I don't understand why the Hell Cesar is complaining, surely a 12 month ban isn't going to mean Jack squat to Nick seeing as he has "Retired" from MMA, and like others have sad the reason Nick has been banned a year is because it is his second offense. I think that really Nick should learn how to fill in license forms properly, learn how to turn up for press conferences etc. and should stop bitching about how everyone is against him!

^ this. I'm not getting how an AC would have any interest in DUIs.

Nick said he wasn't going to fight anymore anyways. I am a big Nick Diaz fan but honestly this is the second time this happened. The first time it was a what? 6 or 9 month suspension. He knows he needs to clean his system before fights and he didn't. He knew the rules and broke them. Strike 2, you getting a larger sentence. DEAL.
