    New Survey Shows Surprising Support For MMA As An Olympic Sport

    A new survey has been released by Yahoo! Sports that shows surprisingly strong American support for mixed martial arts as an Olympic support. According to the survey, 25% of Americans think MMA should be included in the Olympics. Other sports people want to see in the Olympics are:



    • Baseball (32%)
    • MMA (25%)
    • Softball (24%)
    • Lacrosse (19%)
    • Field Hockey (15%)

    Yahoo! and Ipsos MediaCT conducted the survey in May of 2012. The online quantitative survey was fielded among 2,000 U.S. adults ages 18-64 who are representative of the U.S. online adult population.
    Fans shouldn't get too excited. This survey is just of American sports fans and only a quarter of those support MMA as an Olympic sport. The Olympics are overrun with events and wanna-be events. MMA as an Olympic sport remains many years away.

      I like that MMA came in well in this poll however I would question the credibility of it, Field Hockey is already an Olympic Sport and has been since 1928!!! Also, Baseball and Softball were both Olympic Sports until these Olympics in London, dropped I would imagine because of the lack of international depth. Personally I don't think they are sports that should be included in the Olympics anyway and that goes for Football(Soccer) too, all sports that should not be involved in the Olympics. On that point I do feel that MMA is ideal as an Olympic sport.

      The only problem is, is we have enough inept judges doing it now, throw the olympic judges into the mix, and we'll have a clusterfuck.

      Maybe becoming an Olympic Sport would help the sport improve and gain more credibility, hopefully leading to an improvement on judging and officiating as a result...

      The sport would probably become pussified by the Olympic committee.

      I think its a long ways though. They should just work on incorporating components of the sport into the olympics. It would be really cool to see BJJ and Muay Thai in the next Olympics. I checked the website for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil and can you believe it doesn't include BJJ?
