GSP vs. Condit and Hendricks vs. Kampmann Penciled In for UFC 154 in Montreal

Posted on June 9, 2012 by Ken Pishna

Everyone has been shying away from it, but UFC president Dana White put a target to UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s return from knee injury.
It wasn’t hard and fast, obviously pending St-Pierre’s recovery, but the planned UFC 154 event in Montreal this November has a GSP bullseye on it.
White said as much when confirming that the UFC is pairing Johny Hendricks with Martin Kampmann. Hendricks vs. Kampmann would don the UFC 154 undercard in support of a Georges St-Pierre vs. Carlos Condit main event.
St-Pierre’s rehabilitation, which he has been posting updates about on YouTube and Facebook, has been going well. He recently posted a video of his workout, commenting that he was feeling no pain at all in his knee.
If both fights come together for Montreal, it would become a welterweight blockbuster similar to UFC 146’s heavyweight focus.
The main event would serve to unify St-Pierre’s belt with Condit’s interim championship, while Hendricks vs. Kampmann would likely determine the unified champion’s next contender.
Hendricks bested perennial contender Josh Koscheck in his most recent fight, while Kampmann recently TKO’d Jake Ellenberger.
White fell short of guaranteeing the scenario, but if St-Pierre is healthy, it’s more than likely that it will play out as planned.

It's a GSP and Hendricks double for me, just hope GSP comes back ready for Condit cos if not Condit will be in there for the W!

this would really help clean up the division quick. It's almost a little 4 man tourney to find the King. And just in case you didn't know, I don't mean to ruin it for you but it's going to be Condit when it all settles.

If GSP doesn't return at 100%, that could very well happen.

I would be in but I talk via a keyboard with a whole lot more conviction than I really have with Condit. But, I've been calling out Condit as the guy to beat this "new" GSP for a while now so I have stick with it.

I wish these fights were on different cards just so we could have Kampmann/Hendricks as a five round main event. I like Kampmann in that fight, he's much more technical than Hendricks on the feet and probably on the ground as well.

I will definitely be rooting for Condit in that fight, I've been sick of GSP for years now, time for him to go.

I don't know, I mean is GSP going to be 100% by then? I feel like hes going to be off his game. Like shogun after he comes back from an injury.

Everyone here knows I'm a GSP mark...I back the champ no matter what. I really think Condit is a very smart, good fighter and have been a fan of his since I seen him first in WEC. I'm really looking forwar to the champ coming back!!!

Everyone knows, I would LOVE for that to happen, but I just don't see it. I basically just see GSP taking Condit down at will. Then Condit will scramble and get back up, then rinse and repeat. Who knows, maybe Condit catches him with something. But I personally just don't see it.

I would normally agree with this statement, except I am not 100% convinced that GSP will beable to return to full strength that quickly, and with a MCL/ACL injury, and GSP's shoots and TD's being his bread and butter, I don't know that he'll still have that explosiveness neccesary to ensure the takedowns.

GSP will destroy Kampmann and Hendricks. Neither is really a strong contender for a title shot to me. Diaz was, but those two offer nothing for GSP.

What's your take on the GSP/Condit matchup?

Yes, that makes sense, but the one thing that makes it so that is kinda voided, is that Condit's takedown defense, is some of the worst in mma. I mean, I have seen 5 year olds put up more fight trying to stop a takedown. Even with the surgery, the way GSP trains his body, I would be shocked if he wasn't at least able to do some serious takedowns. And, although i believe in cagerust, GSP's takedowns at 50% effectiveness, still take Condit down, 100% of the time.
