OK, my TUF 17 Finale main card musings......

Bubba looked a million times better than he did on TUF, yes Gilbert is not very good......but fair play to Bubba, he worked hard and won every round IMO, and finished the fight too......whether he will beat anyone of a good standing, I doubt it, but at least he's given himself a shot.

Travis Browne showed why elbows cannot be banned from MMA, that was a brutal finish on Gonzaga. I don't think any of them landed to the back of the head, maybe 1 as Gonzaga was going down, but they all looked pretty clean to me. Browne needs another shot at a top 10 guy next, maybe the winner of Nelson/Kongo?

Zingano finished Tate really impressively, I had Tate edging both rounds up till then, but Cat finished the second strongly. I see calls that the stoppage was bad, not for me though. It was similar to the stoppage in Invicta last week when Cyborg finished Muxlow, Tate was taking a beating and had no response to it at that point, IMO, the only good decision by 'The Giraffe Lady'-that one's for you BigDawg! I think Zingano could give Ronda a tough test, but seeing how Miesha was moving on sub attempts early on, I'd fancy Ronda to get the armbar in the 1st as per usual!

Now for the TUF final. Hall looked tentative to begin with, then started some strange tactics......when he threw the jab, it landed, can't work out why he didn't use it more often, like he did against Dylan in the semi final. Kelvin did really well and won the first round, I did have Hall win 2 and 3 personally, but it was a close fight. I agree that Kelvin should look to drop to 170, and at 21 he has an exciting future ahead of him. Hall should not lose anything by losing here, he will likely be able to build his career in the UFC a little more slowly now, which is a good thing IMO. Give him someone like Chris Leben next.

Faber did what Faber does, beats anyone who is not a Champion. He won every round but looked great in the first round. He must be very close to another title shot, but I still can't see him beat either Barao or Cruz. Can he be a champion in the UFC, absolutely........but he needs to up his game big time in the title fights.
It was announced in July that Jimi 'Posterboy' Manuwa had finally signed a contract to fight in The UFC. Jimi famously twice turned down the premier MMA organisation feeling he was not quite ready for the step up in competition. He first had the offer to fight at UFC 105 in November 2009 and also could have signed for the UFC prior to signing with BAMMA, but having not fought for a year felt again it was not the right time.

So, now that Jimi has signed with the UFC to fight Kyle Kingsbury at UFC on Fuel 5 in Nottingham, what can we expect from him?

From taking his first fight with only 2 weeks of MMA training in July 2008 against Tom King, to his last fight against Frenchman Anthony Rea, Manuwa has finished all 11 of his fights. He has 10 (T)KO's and 1 submission win, and has only been to round 2 on two occasions, having never reached the third round.

Manuwa has an excellent stand up game, superb Muay Thai, speed and one punch power. His counter striking and knees in the clinch can be devastating. The problem may lie in his ground game, as is usual with fighters from the UK, there has not been much need for a strong grappling base for Manuwa so far, and the UFC will be a huge step up in competition.

Back at the beginning of 2011, Jimi Manuwa was ranked no.3 in Bloody Elbow's World MMA Scouting report, above current(yet to be at that time) UFC fighters, Glover Teixeira, Ryan Jimmo and Ronny Markes. Now we all know how highly Glover is rated, so it gives an idea of the potential that Manuwa possesses. I am really looking forward to seeing how he does against Kingsbury and in the future with the UFC, and I'm certain he will make an impression in the LHW division too.

Now time for some of Jimi's fights.....

When the UFC announced they were finally coming back to the UK to put on an event, many fans were a little disappointed to find out it was going to be an 'on Fuel' card with few big names appearing.

Well it didn't take very long for many of them to change their minds, as the UFC went out and signed 2 of the UK's most promising fighters in Jimi Manuwa and Tom 'Kong' Watson.

In Watson, they have signed the current BAMMA Middleweight champion who has lost only once in his last 12 fights, holding notable wins over Travis Galbraith, Matt Horwich, Marilo Rua, Jack Marshman and UFC on Fuel 5's John Maguire.

It has long been expected that one day the UFC would come calling for Watson, but after defending his BAMMA title against Marilo Rua, Kong needed to have surgery on a back injury, putting him out of action for nearly a year. However after making his comeback, defending his BAMMA title for the 3rd time, defeating Jack Marshman, the UFC finally came calling. So at last we will all see the Jackson's MMA/Tristar Gym trained Tom Watson fight in the UFC against Brad Tavares at UFC on Fuel 5 on September 29th.

Now here is some of Watson's fight videos for everyone to see what he is all about....

Check out some of the ring entrances too....
The comparisons to Anderson Silva are based upon his unorthodox style and counter striking technique, just watch these other videos of him in action to see if you agree....
Page only has 2 MMA fights under his belt currently, and the previously mentioned UK1 bout, but there is no doubting this kid's potential, if he can clean up his technique and work on his ground game, Page could be a monster in the Middleweight division.
MMA in the eyes of the majority is a brutal, dangerous and barbaric pastime....

MMA in the eyes of the majority is a brutal, dangerous and barbaric pastime. Notice I did not say 'Sport', that is because very few people still consider MMA a sport. In the eyes of most, the term MMA does not even exist, the sport is only referred to as Cage Fighting! This to many evokes ideas of 2 men(or women) being locked inside a cage and fighting till one has been beaten unconscious or had limbs broken!

Now to the fans of the sport of MMA, this is a ridiculous point of view. And rightfully so too, MMA is a sport with many rules and regulations to protect the athletes who step into the cage and battle to a hard fought victory. MMA is no more risky than Boxing, Judo, Taekwondo and many other combat sports, and on the whole has a very good safety record.

Obviously the early days of the UFC where the idea was 'There are no rules', has hindered the sport for a long time, however, recent evidence of Fox picking up the UFC product does suggest that there is a realisation that this sport is here and it's here to stay. People are finally coming round to the idea that it takes a great deal of skill and determination to succeed.

There are many MMA organisations around the world now, and the sport still seems to be growing at a phenomemal rate. UFC having TUF on in Brasil as well as the US, with plans to take it all over the world shows that the demand for MMA is growing all the time, also talk of Bellator and a 'reality' show on Spike in the near future shows there is demand for MMA that is not only UFC based.

Now back to my point, the next step to MMA becoming a legitimate sport. I have been concerned recently with many MMA fans(and clearly some fighters feel this way too) reluctance to accept that PED's are bad for the sport. There has been plenty of high profile cases of PED abuse lately, with Leben, Diaz, Marquardt, and now Overeem. I have seen a lot of people on MMA forums, Twitter etc trying to justify the use of PED's, going as far as to say why not just legalize them all to create a level playing field!!!

This is unbelievably stupid, dangerous, and incredibly niave in my opinion. There is simply no reason for 'cheating' with the use of PED's to create a level playing field, if nobody used them there would be a level playing field! These guys are putting their health at risk by using PED's and that of the opponent they face in the cage, this simply cannot be accepted. And in the long run if PED use is not dealt with properly then commissions, authorities, Countries will look at banning the sport, remember this sport is still considered barbaric by many people, and this would be an easy excuse to justify banning MMA.

A ban currently for PED use in MMA can be for as little as 6 months, usually only maybe 1 fight, hardly a deterrent! For the future of MMA there is a need for random testing of all fighters, especially in an organistion such as the UFC. Most elite sports have random testing now and MMA must look to ensuring this happens and happens soon. Also punishments must act as a deterent, therefore longer bans and possible lifetime bans must now be considered. This is for the health of the athletes as much as it is for the future of the sport of MMA.

I was as gutted as everyone was that Overeem was caught using PED's and that his fight with JDS now looks to be off. This is not the fault of the drug testers or commission that found his testosterone levels to be high, the fault lies at the door of Alistair Overeem for cheating, he knew the risk and still decided to cheat. This was a huge headline match-up and now the card for UFC 146 will be weaker as a result of Overeems actions, and nobody elses. It is up to Dana White and Zuffa to decide whether he keeps his job now, and I'm not holding my breath on that one!!! It's a long road back now for Overeem, surely now thinking to himself, 'Why did I do it?' It's for others to realise too, that PED's have no place in sport whatsoever.
