Thursday November 12, 2009 saw the South African MMA scene erupt at EFC Africa 01 at the Coca Cola Dome in Johannesburg. This event was huge for South Africa, firstly because it was a production of the highest level, and more importantly, because top South African fighters could finally measure themselves up against quality opponents from the United States.
Some of the top fighters in S.A. faced each other in a solid fight card which was highlighted by the main event.
The first of the two international fights was Muhannad Barazi from Texas, USA against talented South African heavyweight contender, Danie van Heerden. This was a disappointing match up as Barazi was totally outclassed by Van Heerden. Perhaps we were disappointed because, prior to the fight, Barazi was very vocal about how good and how experienced he is.
The final fight saw South Africa’s Chris Bright take on Gabe Casillas of the Wand Fight team in Las Vegas. This bout was always going to head to the ground as both of these fighters are fantastic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. Once on the ground we were treated to a master class in BJJ and South Africa’s Chris Bright won the fight by an armbar late in the first round.
All in all, it was a brilliant evening for South African Mixed Martial Arts. The EFC are taking the sport to another level and are aligning themselves with the leading Mixed Martial Arts Magazine in the world, Fighters Only.
