Alot of people use BJJ as a "foundation" for their ground game. Some don't. Which is superior to which? Eddie Bravo for instans thinks that if your going to fight "no-gi" , you should train "no-gi". Any schools/styles in particular that are "better" or diffrent!?

Is training grappling without G&P superior to training only with G&P or should you mix it up?

If you want to be a MMA athlete go no gi. I have trained BJJ (not anymore) and I think that a gi is very good, If you want just self defense, because when you use it for self defense in a real life situation chances are slim your adversary is going to be dressed in a speedo wearing a cup.

What, I'm always wearing my Speedo but not my cup.

But honestly, I view it almost the opposite of Wood on this one. I hated training with a gi for 2 reasons. I wouldn't be wearing one in the street and either would the guy I would be facing. A lot of Gi JJ, uses your own gi for control and chokes or it uses their gi. Now there's a chance that the guy you are against in the street might have on a jacket or a really good strong shirt so you might be able to pull it off. But back in Maryland, I was training with a couple of guys that practiced Gi BJJ. I just usually ended up with a torn shirt from them trying stuff. IMO and it's only and opinion, if you can make your BJJ work no-gi, it should be able to work most of the time in most situations. But then again, I'm not a huge fan of BJJ being taught as a primary self defense. It's great to learn it and to be fluid on the ground but I would never feel good going there on purpose in a street fight, there's always guy #2 that would just love the easy soccer kick. Not saying my views are right, just my views. ;)

All great points Misfit. I said train with a gi because a lot of people do not have great flexibility (rubber guard comes to mind) and they can use that jacket like you said to hold their opponent. I only say this in real life situations. Their shirts are going to get ripped in almost any type fight anyway. I have only seen a few real street fights and usually one guy or the other will get a hole , rip, tear etc.

The best defense is quick feet by running away.

Self defense = Don't go outside, lock your door, get a gun(or sniper rifle) shoot everything that moves = preemptive self defense 101.

We'll i was mostly thinking about grappling for competition and in the dojo/gym.

Maybe we should have a self defense section!?

I think Bjj is the way to go if you are cage figthing in my oppinion, I train in a american style of bjj called american jiu jitsu... And the one and only reason that i train in this art is just in case my stand up doesnt cut it and I get taken down I would like to be well versed on the ground to be able to protect myself because being ground and Pounded is not fun TRUST ME lol

I think the good wrestlers are just as effective but more boring (LnP) I am biased toward BJJ.

You will definitely need some type of standup, boxing, kick boxing etc Maia proved nobody can beat him on the ground ya just gotta get there, that's the hard part.

I gotta say, no-gi sounds alot better for MMA - than BJJ. But BJJ is better than doing no ground work at all :)

NO-Gi for sure> I've never trained with a GI on just because when your wearing one the fact is that there are another million ways for your opponet to put you in a unfavorable position

I've trained in both and i like no gi much more because i use the rubberguard and mission control allot. I also want to get into mma so no gi is what i have to get use to

Yeah, no-gi is definately essential for MMA, but I actually really like gi. You can say that from a self-defense perspective, nobody is wearing the gi on the street, but that's not really the whole picture. Look at the gi and then look at some guy coming at you with a jacket on. The grips are the same, and you can hit a baseball choke with a jacket or a sweatshirt just like you can with the lapels on a gi. So yeah, no-gi is certainly more practical for serious MMA training, but the gi I've found is extremely helpful for self-defense.

I know what you're saying here bro. Honestly though, in MMA wrestling is nothing but a means to an end. You can't just take somebody down and lay on them, that isn't winning a fight. Years ago, judges used to be biased towards Lay and Pray wrestlers because they still didn't know about BJJ. Now people realize that jut because you put a guy on his back, it doesn't necessarily mean you are beating him. A guy with an active guard, using threatening submission attempts and sweeps, is beating the guy on top who i throwing sporadic punches/elbows and not passing guard. Wrestling is a way to bring the fight to the ground and keep it there, but unless you have a good balance between ground and pound and grappling, it's not going to do you much good.
