DREAM to use North American-style five-minute rounds for Oct. 25 DREAM.12 event

The Japanese-based DREAM organization raised more than a few eyebrows with the recent announcement that October's DREAM.12 event will take place in a six-sided white cage, rather than the organization's traditional ring.

Now the organization is announcing an additional change for the upcoming event: the bouts will consist of three five-minute rounds rather than the promotion's traditional two-round format (with a ten-minute opening round).

DREAM.12 takes place Oct. 25 at Osaka Castle Hall in Osaka, Japan. The event airs in North America on HDNet.

While the changes mark a significant switch from the promotion's typical rule set, DREAM event producer Keiichi Sasahara announced that the adjusted format will be used just once each year in a special DREAM production.

I guess this is part of the ground breaking news, along with the 6-sided cage that they're calling "The Great Experiment" !

I love it to be honest. Not sure how it will go over in Japan but I hope it works. Then all they need to do is add elbows and remove the soccer kicks. Wait, maybe they already have removed the soccer kick.

Why six and not eight? UFC doesn't have a patent on an octagon.

Actually, they might when it comes to cage fighting. I seem to remember Zuffa taking somebody to court in the past but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Oh then that's probably it.

The octagonal competition mat and cage design are registered trademarks and/or trade dress of Zuffa, LLC and are symbolic of the highest quality mixed martial arts events presented under the Ultimate Fighting Championship brand name. In 1993, UFC events were the first to feature an eight-sided competition configuration which has become known worldwide as “the UFC Octagon” trademark.

Full story if you are up for a read, it was just over 2 years ago they won their case.

Honestly, the phrase "in the octagon" is a UFC thing which makes sense. It just sucks that it's pretty much the best size ring and no one can really use it. I think these rule changes are hilarious though, need to have elbows for sure but I'm done with soccer kicks.

I don't mind the Strikeforce cage at all either. Now that YAMMA thing was really bad but besides that, as long as it's not ropes, I'm pretty damn happy.
