MMA Quick Quote: If Jorge Masvidal gets a title shot against Gilbert Melendez he's 'taking that belt home' by Geno Mrosko (http://www.sbnation.com/users/Geno%20Mrosko) on Jun 19, 2011 10:00 PM EDT (http://www.mmamania.com/2011/6/19/2232435/mma-quick-quote-if-jorge-masvidal-gets-a-title-shot-against-gilbert)

"I'd love to fight Gil because he has the belt. It's not personal, I want to kick his butt because he has that belt. I think he's a great fighter, crazy cardio, guy has cardio through the roof, but if they set up that fight, I'm going to let you know right now I'm taking that belt home with me, man."
-- Freshly minted Strikeforce (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/promotion/strikeforce) lightweight number one contender (maybe) Jorge Masvidal (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/129635/jorge-masvidal) tells Fighters Only (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a519EizakAM&feature=feedu) that if he does indeed get the title shot against current champion Gilbert Melendez (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122538/gilbert-melendez) he will "take the belt home with him." The feisty Cuban butt-kicker earned his crack at the crown by knocking off top 155-pounder K.J. Noons (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122539/k-j-noons) last night (June 18, 2011) at the "Overeem vs. Werdum" event in Dallas, Texas. "Gamebred" executed a brilliant technical fight, utilizing a superior all-around game to out-box, out-wrestle and completely outgun "King Karl." Despite the victory, there are quite a few folks that believe he doesn't stand much of a chance in a prospective match-up against "El Nino." Agree with that thought process? Or could Masvidal do exactly as he says and take the title home with him?

disagree, completely lol, i dont think hes gonna have what it takes against gil, cause while i thought kj noons would beat him,kj noons isnt gilbert melendez, and there is a segnificant difference, and despite them announcers trying to telling you kj noons has trained BJJ for 15 years, the only thing i seen from him was the ability to get up, i didnt see him throwing any subs, plus kj is a boxer, as where gil will use elbows or kicks or fists and he can wrestle

Yea I agree , as I also thought noons was gonna win I don't think masvidal is in the same level as Melendez .
I was pretty impressed with masvidals first round performance but 2nd and 3rd he did a lot of backing up and thts were gil would capitalize

Masvidal looked pretty damn good. He beat Noons a hell of a lot better than Nick Diaz did that's for sure. I haven't watched him fight a lot so it's kind of hard to have a strong opinion here, but I think he's got a nice shot at beating Milendez. let's just hope that the UFC doesn't take 6 months to make it happen.

He's worthy of fighting Gil IMO, it's such a thin division for SF, I like the fight. Anything that can help Gil burn through some of his fights he's contracted for, the sooner he's in the UFC.

Agree completely. Melendez is on another level. We all get so excited over the most recent performances and have such short memories.

He's as worthy as anybody else they have right now. I see this going a lot like Guida vs pettis to he honest.

Who is the last guy that beat the hell out of Noons like that. Masvidal owned him and proved that he has a skill set that could potentially give Gilbert problems.

I was impressed with Masvidal... I didn't see that coming at all.
