The rematch will have to wait.
Brazilian heavyweight Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1 MMA, 3-0 SF), who in June handed Fedor Emelianenko his first legitimate career loss, is on the shelf until the first quarter of 2011.
Werdum's management today announced that "Vai Cavalo" is scheduled for elbow surgery on Aug. 18, and he'll need six weeks of physical therapy before he can return to training.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker hinted at the need for the procedure in a conversation with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) earlier this week.
"The date (of Werdum's next fight) is really to be determined because Fabricio is not going to fight until the beginning of next year, so he's going to be sidelined for the next five months," Coker said.
According to the announcement, Werdum will undergo diagnostic/operative arthroscopic debridement. In layman's terms, the outpatient procedure will remove bone fragments from Werdum's left elbow, and the heavyweight hops to return to action in the first quarter of 2011.
Werdum said he's delayed the procedure as long as possible and looks forward to seeing what he can accomplish when he returns to action completely healthy.
"I have put this procedure off for about two years now," Werdum stated. "I am thankful that I have been able to compete at the highest international levels in both mixed martial arts and submission grappling and prove victorious despite my nagging injury.
"You’ve seen what I can do when I’m hurt, imagine what I can do when I’m healthy. Either way, without the support of my family, friends, Scott Coker and Strikeforce, I couldn't do anything."
Emelianenko's management team has openly requested a rematch with Werdum, and immediately following the fight the Brazilian seemed receptive to the idea. However, the next step for both fighters has yet to be determined.
