Bryan Humes is one of the better up and coming heavyweight fighters that you probably have never heard of. Humes recently had an undefeated record of 6-0 until he met Paul Buentello at Shark Fights 11 on May 22nd in Amarillo, Texas. Humes lost the fight via unanimous decision, but said continuing the undefeated streak was something that never bothered him much.
"People ask me this all the time, 'What's the pressure like?' There was a little bit of pressure there because of the guy I was fighting, Paul Buentello," reflected Humes. "He's a UFC vet. He's the only guy who has fought for the UFC belt and the Strikeforce belt. There was a little bit of pressure. But to me, the undefeated thing, I haven't even really fought anyone that has been any good yet. I've done what I am supposed to have done."
Humes continued, "Just going into the fight, it was main event against Paul Buentello. It was in his home state. I had two fans there: my wife and her friend drove from Vegas. In the whole crowd I had two fans! I tell people fighting is not pressure. Life is pressure. Dealing with daily struggles of raising kids and paying bills, that's pressure. Fighting, it's my therapeutic stress relief."
Humes has an avid wrestling background, but is most known now for his Muay Thai striking abilities. Learning Muay Thai didn't come easy for Humes, either. "I wrestled in 6th grade all the way through high school. Once I got into MMA, I wanted to start doing Muay Thai first, because I wanted to learn the striking game. I just dedicated myself to Muay Thai for the first two years. Every day, twice a day I was in the gym. I didn't have a drivers license. I was riding my bike. People were laughing at me, making fun of me, riding my bike in the Vegas heat. But I was the only one there twice a day. I began sparring with pros. I've been doing Muay Thai for five years now."
Coming from the small town of DeKalb, IL, home of Northern Illinois University, Humes had a lot going against him entering the world of MMA. "I have to tell everyone don't give up on your dreams. Follow it to the end. That was a big thing with me. I've been doubted my whole life. I came from an unstable home, parents, that kind of thing. All I heard my whole life was, 'You can't do this. You can't do that. You can't do it. You'll never be able to do it.'"
"One thing that I loved to do was to prove people wrong," continued Humes. "If I could prove you wrong, it just made my day. I had people tell me, 'You're going to move out to Vegas? You're going to be an alcoholic. You're never going to amount to nothing.' Well, here I sit. I don't drink. I don't do drugs. I don't party. I don't do anything and all I do is come to the gym every day and I live my life. And I take care of my family. So for the last seven years I've been proving people wrong."
As for future MMA fight prospects for Humes, that's still up in the air. Bryan doesn't have anything scheduled just yet, but he continues to keep looking. "I know Shark Fights is coming up in August," said Humes. "There is a WKC Muay Thai show in Primm, NV. I'm trying to get on that. There are things out there that I'm looking at, but I just don't have anything set yet. But I'm sure I will fight in August."
Although most young fighters enter MMA dreaming of attaining UFC gold, Humes has a different perspective on becoming heavyweight champ, "For me this is how I make money and this is how I live. If the opportunities arise for me to climb up the ladder, I'm going to take it. If they don't arise, I'm going to keep doing small shows, keeps punching people in the face, and keep getting paid. And that's the way it's going to go."
"Whether I make it to the international spotlight or not, I'm going to keep doing it. Regardless. I have mouths to feed," continued Humes. "Where I want to be? Of course I want to be in the big show. That's where everybody wants to be. But it's hard to get there. I'd go fight for Strikeforce. I'd go fight in Japan. I'll go fight anywhere if they want me. In August I might go to Crown Boxing and make my pro boxing debut."
Regardless of what happens to Bryan Humes in his pro MMA, pro Muay Thai, or possible pro boxing career, Humes will keep on proving people wrong. As Humes continues to do that, he will surely gain more fans and climb the professional fighting ranks.
